Oak (Quercus)
A slow growing, deciduous hardwood tree native to the U.K. The most common being English oak (Quercus robur).
Beloved for its traditional "tree shape" it is the quintessential tree. Incredibly hardy and long lived oak can grow well in excess of 30m in the right conditions, live for more than 100 years and is known for surviving incredible hardship.
Grown for its beautiful wood in timber production, though often mistaken for being more valuable than it is. Oak trees are often tree-mendous habitats for over 100 species of insects, fungi and other flora.
An excellent tree for the domestic property. Oak reacts well to a good pruning to keep its size and shape fitting for the garden. Oak should only be pruned heavily in winter when they are dormant. Oak is prone to infection and ultimately sudden oak death; more likely a problem when pruned in summer months leaving open wounds exposed to common pathogens.
